Clearing Coppice Leasowes

This week the TTF (Tuesday Task Force) were working alongside some volunteers from the council to clear vegetation around the young trees. This was to help the trees in their early years of establishment and in the woodlands the brambles were cleared to help the Primroses to grow.

Partnership with HF

Assistant Ranger Nick Robinson and Volunteer Pete Johnston have been working in partnership with the Long Mynd Hotel, delivering presentations to the HF Holiday Walkers. This gives them an insight into how the hills are managed and shows them the best places to walk.

Riders Raising Money

Bikers of all ages were out this weekend to raise sponsorship for a new skate park in Church Stretton. 182 miles were clocked up in laps between the Strettons and Carding Mill Valley by riders of all ages. It was a great effort to help raise the £150,000 needed to create somewhere for youngsters to exercise & enjoy the outdoors in Church Stretton. 

National Trust was pleased to support such an event that will help youngsters to meet up, BMX, scoot, skateboard and benefit from exercise in the great outdoors.

Scrappies at CMV

Learning Officer, Chris Stratton is helping support Scrappies recycling store in Church Stretton by using their materials in an Art service to schools.  

Learning providers Rob, Suzanne, Laura, Jerry, Anne and Chris supervised microscope work on stream water invertebrates with two visiting groups this week. They also compared what differences there were with insects in placid water at the ponds. 

Scrappies Artist Liz Still also worked alongside these 100  students to encourage children to carefully study Dragonflies and Damselflies and take home some brilliant creations (which you can see here) all made from scrap materials. If you are an artist or involved with a local school there are some great materials to be had very cheaply at Scrappies in Church Stretton.

Church Stretton Walking Festival

Last week the Church Stretton walking festival went ahead with numerous walks all week. Nick Robinson Assistant Ranger at CMV led 2 walks on the 7th and the 9th June. One was a 9 and a half mile walk and the other a 6 and a half mile walk.

 Participants walked past numerous sites on the hill for example Pole Bank, Lightspout waterfall and the Reservoir in CMV, all the way learning about the history, the geology, and the management of the site. At the end of both walks participants all got to have a very well deserved cup of tea and a lie down!

New Slate Signs

There are some new signs in place on the Long Mynd and Church Stretton. They have been installed on the slate slabs in various locations. In total there are five which welcome visitors to Church Stretton, the Long Mynd and Carding Mill Valley.

 Adam and his colleague from Stretton Memorials with help from Tom Llewellyn (FTV),  installed all the signs at the end of last week. A few National Trust omega signs will also be added to finish them off.
